Telus is on the edge in opening a Call Centre in March that will be located in Las Vegas, Nev. This is a shift that will produce a maximum of 1,000 new jobs in Sin City; this also includes some headquarter style jobs in Canada.

Telus International is a growth area for the Vancouver-based telecommunications giant; it is a part of a tentative agreement between Telus and the city of Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency. It will be supported by the Vegas call centre by adding Spanish-language support to the division's call centre and business process outsourcing services. The company signed a 51-month contract with $2.9 million lease for office space that will accommodate the new Vegas call centre. According to Shawn Hall, Telus spokesman, Telus International services has sister companies that focused on utilities, telecommunications, consumer electronics, energy and financial services. Spanish is the language provided to Telus International's U.S. based-clients to serve them better. There are few communities in Canada with Spanish speakers, so the company had to find for areas where they can get a lot of team members that can speak in Spanish. The capacity of the growing area of Telus' business will be supplemented by the Vegas call centre.

The company will implement a technique that will increase the size of existing teams in Alberta, B. C. and Ontario, Canada. They will be employing accountants, lawyers, marketing, public relations, and finance staff in Canada to fill up the needed members of the team who will support the said expansion. In an e-mail, Jace Radke, spokesman for the City of Las Vegas said that the City of Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency is working toughly to catch the attention of businesses like Telus to the city to produce new job opportunities inspite of the economic crisis. Among the 47 American cities, Las Vegas was chosen because of its large, fluent Spanish and English speaking labor group. The expansion envisioned Telus International's operations to widen from the 7,000 agents to 10,000 this year between Vegas and its existing call centres located in Central America, the Philippines, Singapore and Canada.

Telus International plays a task when a customer, say for instance, an American gas company, asks about the details of his bill. When he dialled 1-800 to inquire, the agent who will attend to the customer’s query is actually a Telus agent. Corporations also wish for providers to have geographic range, that is why Telus established operations in different countries and continents. They aim to serve their customers continuously even during disasters. [via]
